ash and arrow keys / backspace

I'm using busybox 1.8.2 with allnoconfig then a hodgepodge of commands
added.
When I press backspace, it moves the cursor, but the character is not
deleted.
When I press up arrow, it moves the cursor up instead of doing command line
history.

With an alternate busybox executable I called busybox.ti -> ash works as
expected.  That version was v1.2.2 and was supplied by another vendor.

Since one works and the other doesnt, I would guess that this is
v1.8.2source code related instead of an environment issue.

Can anyone please give me a hint where I can look to solve this?
