No, I don't use udev.

I see, but without using udev, symlinking to the real rootdev doesn't
help a lot because I don't think that there's a way to determine wheter
the system uses scsi/s-ata or IDE inside of grub...

Well, on my thinclient image, root=/dev/ram0 because I use an initial
ramdisk as some kind of "firmware" image.
