This cannot be the problem:
# ls -al /dev/log
lrwxrwxrwx 1 0 0 8 Jan 22 2007 /dev/log -> /tmp/log
# ls -al /tmp/log
srw-rw-rw- 1 0 0 0 Jan 1 00:00 /tmp/log
