Compilation fails with bbconfigopts.h:13 hmm, unterminated

With both busybox 1.2.2 and 1.2.2.1 I get the error message
"...bbconfigopts.h:13 hmmm, unterminated"
which results in compilation failing.  Checking bbconfigopts.h it seems
every line has a linefeed then what should be the closing quote.

The author of those messages mentioned Ubuntu; I am using Xubuntu.

You asked him about the version of awk;

for me, awk reports: GNU Awk 3.1.5
and sed is: GNU sed version 4.1.5

and for free, make is: GNU Make 3.81
