[BusyBox] ash shell profile

Hi

can anybody help?, i'm trying to get busybox to read a profile file when it
starts the shell from a telnet deamon, according to the source it looks
for either 'profile' in the root directory or 'profile' in /etc, but it
doesn't seem to either be reading the file or acting on the commands
my profile file contains: alias dir='ls -la' - thats all! as a test

can any body suggest what i'm doing wrong?
