[BusyBox] Pristine source builds

I just tried to build busybox-1.00-pre10 in "pristine source"
mode, and it looks totally broken.  Am I the only one who likes
to keep (multiple architectures worth of) binaries separate from
the sources?  Is there a trick that I don't know about?
If it were up to me, and I'm not imagining things, this would
qualify as a release-stopper problem (sorry, Erik).

I'll plug away at it some, but I could use some help.
